Hot Weather Hazard, Continued . . .
Symptoms of heat stroke can strike swiftly and can include lethargy, dark red/purple gums, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing and can lead to seizures, coma and death.
If you find your dog is experiencing these symptoms immediately remove your dog from the heat and sun. Try to bring your dog’s body temperature down right away by using cool, not ice, water. Submerge the dog, (being careful to keep his head above water), or use a hose or wet cloths and get him to the veterinarian as soon as you possibly can. Time is of the essence, for even with the best veterinary care many dogs will suffer organ damage and death from this tragedy!!
Your dog can be at risk in the heat outside of a vehicle also. Make sure not to exercise your dog when temperatures are high and fresh water must be available at all times!!! Short faced dogs such as Pugs and Bulldogs are at increased risk for heatstroke and should be protected as such.
A small amount of precaution is all that is needed to keep your beloved pet safe this summer season!!!
