An
underweight calico cat receives some much needed TLC.
Tuesday, July 24, 2012
On Tuesday the Niagara County SPCA began removing cats from
a residence on Lake Rd in Somerset. We suspect the owner of
the property was running a makeshift rescue. The owner
Beverly Cox moved to Tennessee in April and left the cats in
the hands of a caretaker. We believe between 50 and 100 cats
live in the residence which has been condemned by
building inspectors. Rescue efforts are underway this weekend through early
next week to remove the remaining animals from the home. We are working
with local rescue groups Feral Cat Focus and Buffalo Humane
to trap the cats and adopt out the friendly cats and find
barn homes for those that are feral.
If anyone is
willing to become a caretaker for these cats after spay and neuter, please
contact the SPCA at 716-731-4368.
The Niagara County Health Department has generously loaned
the SPCA 100 dog crates, litter pans and food and water
bowls for the care of these animals while they are being
cared for at the shelter.
This will be an ongoing effort. Officials from the town of
Somerset say the home is set for demolition sometime in the
near future so the shelter and rescue groups will work
diligently to remove all of the cats from the property as
quickly as possible. Most of these animals are ill and will
require a great deal of veterinary care. To donate to the
care and treatment for these animals click

To date, 45 cats have been removed from the property on
Lake Road in Somerset. We are pleased that most of the cats appear
to be friendly. There are a few that we believe to be feral. Traps
are still on the ground for the remaining 5 -7 animals in the
residence. A big thank you goes out to Carol Tutzauer, Clara Miller
and Caroline Boback from Buffalo Humane; Kelley Casale from Feral
Cat Focus; Kim McDonnell from Diamonds in the Ruff; independent
rescuer Sally Merrit-Blake and husband John and Michelle Lee
Hutchinson from No-Kill Buffalo-Niagara for their ongoing
support and assistance.

The owner of the Somerset cats Beverly Cox is being
charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty and is set for
arraignment on September 6, 2012 at 6pm at the Barker-Somerset
Court. The cats are SPCA property at this point. We will keep
you up to date on proceedings and let you know when the cats are
available for adoption!

The majority of the cats from Somerset will be
spayed and neutered and ready for adoption by the middle
of next week. Many have come around and are quite social
thanks to the wonderful volunteers that come into the
shelter every day to make sure they have clean cages,
fresh food and water. Please stay tuned if you are
interested in adopting one of these down on their luck
cats!
